USTA Tennessee recognizes Southern Senior Cup Captain
Darrell McDonald for his service
With over 15 years of leadership, outgoing Southern Senior Cup Captain Darrell McDonald, from Chattanooga, TN, has gone above and beyond to serve and lead the Tennessee Men’s Senior Cup Team. Darrell was recruited to play on the very first Tennessee Southern Senior Cup Team in 1986 and has been involved with the tournament ever since. In 2009, Darrell was recognized for his contributions to tennis with an honorable induction into the TN Tennis Hall of Fame.
In reflecting on the past 30 years, Darrell sums up what makes the Southern Senior Cup special to him.
“I’ve had the opportunity to play with some of the most talented players in our state and country, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the players over the years,” said Darrell. “What I love most about playing in this premiere event is that it gives Tennessee players a chance play people they wouldn’t ever have the opportunity to play against otherwise.”
Darrell will be succeeded by Mike Parker, also a native of Chattanooga, TN. When asked about Mike, Darrell notes his skill as a player and teammate, and expresses his great confidence in Mike’s ability to lead the Tennessee team as captain moving forward.
“Mike has been a great help for me over the years. He has been a great recruiter, player, and team member,” said Darrell. “Mike knows the players as well as the quality of the players, so in finding a captain, I know that there is no one better than Mike Parker.”
Mike recognizes Darrell for his past years of service and expresses his excitement to lead the Men’s Senior Cup team.
“I couldn’t rightly take this role without first recognizing Darrell for his past years of service,” said Mike. “Darrell has put so much time, work, effort, and thought into serving the Men’s Senior Cup Team, and I truly appreciate him.”
“I am honored to be selected as the men’s team captain and am grateful for the privilege I’ve had to play on the senior cup team over the years,” said Mike. “I look forward to the selection process in choosing this year’s team. In the process, we plan for the team to not only have talent but also diversity. We want to make sure that every part of our state is represented.”
The 31st Annual Southern Senior Cup will take place in Huntsville, AL, June 1-4, 2017. Any 4.5 competitive players interested in applying for consideration may submit an application here. Selected players will receive notice from the USTA TN office and further details prior to the event.
