Junior Tournament Raises Awareness for Sean Karl Foundation

The second annual Sean Karl Fall Junior Championships were hosted at The Brentwood Swim and Tennis Club at Wildwood on September 30th – October 2nd. More than one hundred junior tennis players competed in the event that seeks to raise awareness for the foundation started in Sean’s name by his parents, Mike and Laurie Karl. The foundation’s goal is to raise necessary research funds to fight Ewing Sarcoma (a rare form a bone cancer) and to increase awareness for pediatric cancer research as a whole.

Tournament Director, Andy Veal, is a long time coach and friend to the Karl family. He started the tournament to honor Sean and bring awareness to the foundation.

"We want to keep the memory of Sean alive at the club. He was a tremendous player and worker; we called him ‘The Beast’. He encouraged and played with everyone in the program regardless of their age or ability,” Veal said. “Sean was truly a leader and the guy you always wanted to be around.”

This year’s event raised $1,250 for the Sean Karl foundation, which came from a portion of the entry fees along with donations made on site.

The Sean Karl Foundation has been established to honor and remember Sean Karl by helping children who are fighting Ewing Sarcoma. Their goal is to fund promising Ewing Sarcoma research, find a cure to this pediatric disease as well as seek to raise awareness about the insufficient funding for pediatric cancer research.
