Community Tennis Spotlight: Nashville

Community Center Spotlight: Andy Mizzell & Margaret Allen Middle School

Andy Mizzell of Nashville, Tennessee loves to teach school and also teach tennis.  He has found a way to put the two together in a very special way.  After growing up playing tennis in private schools, country clubs, and later at Lipscomb University, Andy Mizell became a public middle school teacher at Margaret Allen Middle School.  After teaching there for nine years, he was looking for a way to expose tennis to the underserved students in his school.   However, the school property was lacking in tennis courts, so they chose the next best thing...the bus lane!

After receiving donations from USTA Tennessee and other friends, the kids now have access to plenty of racquets, pop-up nets, tennis balls, and even access to bus transportation home.  They set up about 11 courts around the bus lane and practice different drills and games.  There has been tremendous support from local area tennis players who have volunteered their time to help coach, as well as outstanding support from the teachers at Margaret Allen who have never played tennis.  The program currently has fifty-five students and was recently approved as a National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) chapter.

USTA Tennessee wants to thank Andy Mizzell for being an inspiration on and off the tennis court and for supporting the game of tennis!  We especially love his “no courts, no problem” attitude!  If you know of someone in your community that you would like to see under the spotlight, email Kim Wilson TNOffice@ustatn.com
