SCS_HPELW_Reflections_2017_-_Tennis_Awards

Memphis Tennis Association presented awards at the Shelby County Schools’ Health, Physical Education, & Lifetime Wellness End of the Year Reception. Awards were given to coaches and advisors who have exceeded expectations in their efforts to introduce tennis in schools. Those who were recognized and awarded included Coach Kyle Kuusisto from Maxine Smith STEAM Academy; Coach Taurus Norfleet from Hamilton Middle School; Coach Bob Kerlin from Cordova Elementary School; Coach Eric Martin from John P. Freeman Optional; Coach Kirsten Brown from Dexter Elementary School; and Kelley Greene and Dr. Cassandra Turner, SCS Health, Physical Education & Lifetime Wellness Instructional Advisors.

The award recipients have attended USTA On-Court Training workshops, have introduced tennis to their students via their PE programs, and have been a part of the Memphis Open All-Stars.  Many have also taken their students on field trips to neighborhood tennis facilities and have coached tennis clubs for their kids.

They understand and believe tennis can instill self-confidence, honesty, and integrity; teach responsibility and dedication; increase problem solving, strategizing, and social skills; develop sportsmanship; improve mental strength and work ethic; and impact a child's journey.

Their dedication to offering the best possible experiences, opportunities, and benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle and developing impeccable character is why so many great programs like tennis are available in the schools.

Thank you to all of the coaches and advisors for everything you do! We appreciate you!

Also, the Memphis Tennis Association was given the Visionary Award from the SCS HPELW. The award recognized MTA for its outstanding support and commitment to health and physical education – for having the vision and leading by example. Laura Huss, USTA Community Coordinator and MTA Board Member, was present to receive the award.

Thank you MTA for your commitment to growing tennis in our state!
