USTA Southern Celebrates 50 years of NJTL with Leadership Camp at Hadley Park

Nashville, TN  Nashville was the host site for the four-day tennis and educational USTA Southern Leadership Camp for top-achieving National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) youth that provides tennis instruction as well as rewarding educational experiences including a community service project, leadership activities and team building. Camp and other 2019 activities celebrate the NJTL founding in 1969 by Arthur Ashe.

Players were greeted at Hadley Park by Nashville’s NJTL, Friends of Hadley Park during the opening ceremony and treated with special tours of Tennessee State University and The Parthenon.  Days two and three consisted of team building exercises, swimming.   Each day was filled with tennis instruction and competitive tennis shoot-out style format.   As a means to give back to the host community, the campers participated in a community service project where they did a trash collection in the downtown Nashville area.

The Regional Leadership Camp is held annually at a different host city in the southern section.  NJTL chapters are asked to apply to send three deserving campers from their chapter to participate.  This year there were 53 players in attendance from six states in the Southern section.
