In an effort to promote good behavior and sportsmanship in junior tennis, we have started the "Great Sports" program at select junior tournaments throughout Tennessee. Officials and Tournament Directors will now be able to award good behaviour by presenting pins to juniors who exemplify exceptional sportsmanship during a match or entire tournament.
Examples of rewarding behaviour that has occurred this year:
- A player assisting an opponent who was stung by a wasp
- A singles match between two young players who acknowledged each other's good shots and whose parents clapped fairly for both players.
Officials may use their discretion when selecting pin recipients. THey may also act on parent or player recommendations for other children. Officials will be asked to document the name, age group, and event when a pin is awarded, and a description for why that particular player was chosen. Recipients will be eligible for the annual sportsmanship awards given at the Tennessee Tennis Weekend in Nashville in February (please note: a junior player may still win an annual award without winning a pin during the year).
